With the last name Rambo, you’re pretty much destined for greatness. So it was fitting that Matt Rambo, one of the top lacrosse players in the country, was The Charlotte Hounds’ first-round draft pick in 2017. He will join the roster on the Major League Lacrosse team as an attackman.

Rambo, who graduated from the University of Maryland this year, is the all-time points and goals leader at the university and was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year during his senior year. He also won the Tewaaraton Award—the Heisman Trophy equivalent for the sport of lacrosse.

We caught up with the Hounds’ new player to talk all things lacrosse and get his thoughts on the Queen City so far.

You won the 2017 Tewaaraton Award. tell us about that honor and getting national attention.

Receiving the Tewaaraton Award was awesome and amazing. It’s an honor to be able to receive it, but I look at it as a team award, though. Without my teammates (at the University of Maryland) and coaches this could never happen. I’ve got to give them the credit for everything they have done.

What’s it like going from playing lacrosse in college to playing for a professional team?

I grew up in a town in Pennsylvania outside of Philly called Abington. I started playing when I was in the first grade, following in my brothers’ footsteps. To go from that to taking it to the next level and playing for a professional team is a dream come true.

What do you think about Charlotte so far?

So far, it has been an awesome experience. Everyone has been so nice and welcoming. There are a bunch of Terps (short for “terrapins,” the University of Maryland mascot) on the team, so that has made it an easy transition.

What is your schedule (practice, strength training, and games) with the Charlotte Hounds like?

We have practice the night before a game and we do a walk through on game days. (Games are weekly, and the season goes from April to August). During the week, we are assigned specific workouts to stay in shape and get stronger. Our workout plan is awesome, and our coaches do a great job of putting it all together. Our coaches also make practices fun but tough. It’s truly an awesome environment.

What are you most excited about playing for the Hounds?

I am excited to play with the top players and to play on a team that plays fast. I like that the Hounds are a fun team, but when it comes game time, we are as competitive as it gets and play as hard as we can.
