The city’s first “car vending machine” recently opened at 3631 South Blvd. The eight-story, clear-glass box, which holds up to 32 cars, is owned and operated by Carvana, and while it’s certainly raising some eyebrows, many argue the car dispenser’s footprint is much smaller than that of a traditional dealership.
Customers purchase a car online at Carvana.com and can choose to have it delivered or schedule a time to pick it up at the vending machine site. Customers who choose the latter then insert a commemorative, oversized silver Carvana coin that activates the machine with a rumble and transports the vehicle down from the tower to a ground-floor delivery bay. A robotic lift then takes the car down and slides it to the customer, no human intervention necessary.
